Contre-jour is set on a sandy plain. Five performers walk, run, hop, move like a cat on all fours ... They create different kinds of ‘impressions’, which they then erase to make way for new characters, new choreographies – but also to allow them to disappear. After all, leaving traces could prove dangerous.

In Contre-jour, the performers’ movements leave impressions: both in the sand and in the viewer’s memory. We see five bodies moving across a desolate landscape, like in a film. The five individuals help each other as a group through their collective movements, as well as by giving each other space for solos and duets in song and dance. Comfort and resistance echo in the interplay of togetherness and aloneness.

Following the duet Through the Grapevine, the solo performance Aneckxander and the site-specific performance Screws (all selected for Het Theaterfestival), here – for the first time – Alexander Vantournhout takes on the exclusive role of choreographer, handing off the stage to a cast of five performers, all with diverse backgrounds in dance, musical theatre, circus and more.
