Karlien (°1991, Belgium) is a dancer, yogi and circus artist. These three domains are an endless source of inspiration to her, as well as for creation of her own work, as for didactic purposes as a teacher.

In her work, Karlien blends the aesthetics and human themes of contemporary dance, the added dimension of aerial acrobatics, and the essence of the classical clown – the anti-hero who lives from the heart. This results in a poetic universe that appeals to a wide audience, ranging from the innocent, untrained eye to the discerning connoisseur hungry for technically and artistically sophisticated work that defies easy categorisation.

Her performances ‘Lyubov’ (2024), ‘Lyubochka’ (2024) and ‘YOKAOLA’ (2018) have been shown at festivals such as VITRINE PERPLX, CirkAalst!, Facing Fabrics, Atlantikwall, HARTSTOCHT, Dansen in ’t Park, Gent Bougement and Planeet Malem. Karlien has previously worked with and for Quan Bui Ngoc, Ido Batash, Nicolas Vladyslav, Wili Dorner and Nicole Kohler, including on numerous site-specific projects.

As a freelance teacher at venues including Circusplaneet, Wisper, MUDA and Platform K, Karlien enjoys sharing her eccentric style in a playful and accessible way with a wide and diverse audience, ranging from professional dancers and amateur circus artists to people with disabilities, and everyone in between.
