Karlien (°1991, Belgium) is a dancer, yogi and circus artist. These three domains are an endless source of inspiration to her, as well as for creation of her own work, as for didactic purposes as a teacher.
In her work Karlien juggles with the aesthetics and human themes of contemporary dance, the extra dimension of aerial acrobatics and the essence of the classical clown, the antihero who lives from the heart. This results in a poetic universe that appeals to a broad audience, ranging from the innocent untrained eye to the demanding connoisseur who is thirsty for highly technical and artistic work that is hard to label.
A couple of years ago, Karlien accidentally discovered the world of circus. She created the solo YOKAOLA, a combination of contemporary dance and aerial silks, and performed it at several festivals: CirkAalst!, Dansen in ‘t Park, Gent Bougement, Planeet Malem.
As a freelance teacher, Karlien enjoys sharing her eccentric style in a playful and accessible way to a very vast audience, from professional dancers to amateur circus artists until disabled movers and everything in between. She teaches or taught (dance, yoga and aerial circus) at Circusplaneet, Platform K, Wisper, MUS-E, Passerelle, TALK, Balletschool An Van Den Broeck, Oiterpe, Freefall, MUDA…
