Clockwork Girl is a poetic circusopera for the whole family that merges a classic fairy tale with contemporary social themes. In a mix of live music, acrobatics, and a magical design, the story of The Little Match Girl is retold as a complete visual and emotional spectacle of about 25 minutes. This production makes the reality of child labour in the textile industry—then and now—tangible. Soprano and circus artist Liza Dedapper portrays the title character, combining singing with acrobatics.
Past the coldness, past the factory and its children. To a time where no one shouts out: “Faster now!” or “You little wastrel!” To a time where Emilie Claeys will not need to scream, for all the world is listening. Where children now may read, instead of counting all the clothes they still must sew.
But that's not all. Mien Bogaert has conjured an entire set... from a small trailer. The trailer unfolds like a little box. The clock is mounted on top, the back walls slide out. Speakers are fitted all around, as is the lighting. In other words, Clockwork Girl isn't just a music theatre performance; it's a complete mini-theatre. The only requirements from a venue? Enough height (a clock like that is easily 4 meters high), one power outlet, and ideally a space that can be blacked out. The rest... we bring ourselves.
For schools and educational performances, we also provide an educational pack.
