YOKAOLA is a solo by Karlien De Savoye, created as part of the residency programme ‘Vers Talent’ [Fresh Talent] by Circusplaneet. Coaches were Hazel Lam and Nicolas Vladyslav.
For YOKAOLA, Karlien combines aerial silks and contemporary dance into a poetic whole with a surrealistic touch. We delve into a magical, mysterious atmosphere and intrinsic images carry the audience along into a universe where everything is possible: birds become grass-stalks, seawater bundles into thunderbolts, gravity and other laws of nature get redefined. YOKAOLA fires the imagination and thus invites the audience to let that imagination completely free.
Can you see that thing up in the air? I think it’s some kind of animal, or a doll, or maybe a bird (a bird is an animal). Let’s say it’s a creature. I think it’s harmless. A harmless creature.
Karlien is a Ghent based contemporary dancer. She performed in several (site specific) dance/performance/circus projects. Lately she has been exploring aerial circus and in YOKAOLA she blends aerial silks with dance in a very personal way.
